A Global Ecological Classification of Coastal Segment Units to Complement Marine Biodiversity Observation Network Assessments

چکیده
A new data layer provides Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) labels for global coastal segments at 1 km or shorter resolution. These characteristics are summarized six US Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON) sites one MBON Pole to of the Americas site in Argentina. The coastlines CMECS classifications were produced from a partitioning 30 m Landsat-derived shoreline vector that was segmented into 4 million segments. Each segment attributed with values 10 variables represent ecological settings which coastline occurs, including properties adjacent water, land, itself. classified 81,000 units (CSUs) as unique combinations variable classes. We summarize process develop CSUs derive summary descriptions seven case study sites. discuss intended application CSU research management areas.

Envisioning a Marine Biodiversity Observation Network
(Worm et al. 2006, Stachowicz et al. 2007, Cardinale et al. 2012). In the same way that long-term financial health is stabilized by a diversified portfolio, ecosystem health and resilience are often enhanced by biodiversity (Schindler et al. 2010). These benefits suggest that managing systems to maintain marine biodiversity may provide a way to resolve otherwise conflicting objectives resulting...
متن کاملGlobal Marine Biodiversity Trends
■ Abstract Marine biodiversity encompasses all levels of complexity of life in the sea, from within species to across ecosystems. At all levels, marine biodiversity has naturally exhibited a general, slow trajectory of increase, punctuated by mass extinctions at the evolutionary scale and by disturbances at the ecological scale. In historical times, a synergy of human threats, including overfis...
متن کاملCoastal and marine biodiversity of India
This paper summarizes what is known of the coastal and marine biodiversity of the Indian seas and their various ecosystems, from past literature, museum records and other lesser-known sources of information. The synthesis suggests that the number of species known could be of the order 13,000 or higher. However, the inventory is very detailed only in the case of commercially important groups suc...
متن کاملAssessing Global Marine Biodiversity Status within a Coupled Socio-Ecological Perspective
People value the existence of a variety of marine species and habitats, many of which are negatively impacted by human activities. The Convention on Biological Diversity and other international and national policy agreements have set broad goals for reducing the rate of biodiversity loss. However, efforts to conserve biodiversity cannot be effective without comprehensive metrics both to assess ...
متن کاملGlobal biodiversity patterns of benthic marine algae.
Species richness patterns are remarkably similar across many marine taxa, yet explanations of how such patterns are generated and maintained are conflicting. I use published occurrence data to identify previously masked latitudinal and longitudinal diversity gradients for all genera of benthic marine macroalgae and for species in the Order Bryopsidales. I also quantify the size, location, and o...
